If the child is suffering from mental health issues, but not in danger of immediate harm, a hospital will refer you to outpatient services with a list of therapists. The parents then must track down a therapist with the speciality they need. Because of the high demand, many therapists have wait times of up to 2-3 months before they can see a new patient. This can be a very challenging time for a family who wants help immediately.
Because of this, we highly recommend finding professional help as soon as possible.
We’ve heard from parents that when signs like withdrawal, emotional pain, or sudden mood changes first appear, it’s easy to ignore them. Parents say they dismissed these behaviors as a “phase” of teenage development, rather than recognizing them as potential warning signs of a deeper issue. Teens may push back or ask for space, but no one knows your teen better than you. Trust your instincts. Significant changes in mood or behavior may signal the early stages of a crisis.
Many children need a therapist with specific expertise to address their issues. Parents share how disheartening it can be to search and find a match, only to face months-long wait times for an appointment. Delays like this can add significant stress during a time when their child/teen is especially vulnerable and in need of support.

How to Report Hate-Based Incidents That Occur at School.
- Document, document, document. Include details about who said what (or who did what),where it was said (or done), who was notified, and the response.
- If you are comfortable sharing about the incident, have your parent email InclusioNado so that we can keep a log of incidents, in case there is a need for a larger response in the future. We will only take action on your complaint with your expressed permission.
- If you are unsatisfied with the school’s response to the incident, these are your options:
a. File a Uniform Complaint Procedure with the San Diego County Office of Education.
b. File a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights. Their statute of limitations is 6 months for incidents!!! They will require details and records of all incidents.
c. Request legal assistance from the San Diego ACLU.
d. Hire your own attorney.Please know that by taking action for your own student, you are also working to protect other students’ right to a safe school environment in the future.
Having polled over 200 students, families, and alumni, we at InclusioNado have found that racism and bigotry do exist in CUSD. The students who spoke at the march, the videos and stories posted on the Coronado Times, Sasha Hofisi’s video, and the data we have collected indicate that the issues that need to be addressed include:
- the prolific use of racial slurs
- the lack of discipline when slurs are used
- the Anglo-centric curriculum
- the lack of diversity among the teaching staff
- the lack of teacher training on bias and racism.
